Making things intentionally.
Hi, I’m Alex Basinski! I’m a writer and game designer focused on systems and narrative design (and how the two are connected) based in San Jose, California. I graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a BA in the Art & Design of Games and Playable Media in the June of 2022, and now I’m looking to make my way into the games industry!
During the course of my education, I’ve worked on two 12+ person projects (Final Message and Bìxié) as well as a number of smaller teams and solo projects. I’ve served as a systems designer rapidly designing, prototyping, testing, and revising the base mechanics that make games tick. I’ve served as a writer and narrative designer establishing the themes and narrative structure of games, and then writing the dialogue and text that works with the gameplay to convey those narratives and themes. I’ve served as a programmer too: even when it wasn’t my primary role, I often implemented my own writing work into the game or aided in bug-fixing and revisions efforts as a designer. But perhaps most importantly, I’ve spent my time working with people who I didn’t know (even as I came to love them) under time pressure to create something real together. And even though I’ve come to understand that doing so is stressful, and difficult, and sometimes quite messy, I’ve loved it every time.
I hold a lot of love in my heart for tabletop RPGs, and I’ve been having a LOT of fun branching out from Dungeons and Dragons into games like LANCER, Monster of the Week, Microscope, and Blades in the Dark. I’ve also designed a couple TTRPGs myself (first R.U.N. Escape Program! and then A Wizard’s Work), and I will admit that the design philosophy behind tabletop roleplaying frequently influences my design in other mediums. My favorite video games sometimes reflect that: Outer Wilds‘ completely nonlinear narrative, Hollow Knight‘s beautiful and interesting world, and Disco Elysium‘s deep and responsive characters. I do also love video games for the things that you can’t make at the tabletop too, though: I love games like Metal Gear: Rising Revengeance or Sonic Mania for their deep and deeply satisfying to master levels and tools, and I love games like Risk of Rain 2 or Apex Legends for the chaotic nights I’ve spent playing them with far-away friends. When I’m not playing or making games, I spend my time voraciously devouring books (some of my recent favorites have been Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea series and N. K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth series), slowly learning traditional 2d art and vector art as a hobby, catching the occasional TV show or movie that grabs my attention (Everything, Everywhere, All At Once was spectacular, and even though it was a little dated I really enjoyed watching the original Mobile Suit Gundam series), and cooking up short stories and world-building concepts in my mental back burner that I never quite know when I’ll use until I use them. When looking for inspiration, I tend to look back at all of this stuff — especially my favorite non-game stories, since I’ve found that drawing from just the games I like leads to uninspired design. And I do tend to look for inspiration intentionally, which I have found much more productive than doing so unintentionally. Of course, there’s a whole list of even more stuff that colors my work (I haven’t even mentioned how much I like Studio Ghibli’s Castle in the Sky and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind) but I think this provides a good enough snapshot of my various interests and the inspiration my work draws from them.
If you like what I’ve made, or you’re interested in my design or writing sensibilities, or you just want to talk to me more in depth about anything you’ve seen here, please don’t hesitate to contact me! I respond best to email, but if you really want my immediate attention you should leave me a voicemail and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you for taking the time to look me over!
